This is a file of hex values relating to how combos are set up and used in Phantasy Star IV. The data for how they are set up is quite different from the information describing the actual ability. Part 1) Byte descriptions [part1] Part 2) Byte list [part2] Part 3) Combo Info [part3] Part 3) Notes [part4] Part 1) Byte descriptions [part1] !1: This is the name that the game displays when the combo is activated. Only here as a reference, it is not stored with this data (but quite nearby). Check the offsets list if you want to find this text. !2: This is the offset at which this data can be found. Byte 1: The number of participants. 80 seems to indicate that a combo is order-sensitive. Byte 2+: This is the index number of the techs and skills needed to activate the combo. Techs use their normal index number, and skills have 0x80 added to distinguish them. See section 3 for more information. Order does matter, but enough permutations are listed such that order is irrelevant as long as Deban is cast first! Neat, eh? Update: I found it in the Phantasy Star Compendium translation. Oh well. It still didn't seem well-known. -This section, despite the sensitivity and small number of combos available, has some really neat hacking potential. You could erase permutations of Destruct in order to add new ways to execute other combos. Or, hey, it would be quite easy to change it so that Triblaster will only work with high (Na-) level abilities (and yes, that WOULD make it stronger). If you were to remove Flaeli-potential from Firestorm, you could add 8 new ways to cause other combos. -If you didn't know this before, there are two versions of Hewn, Flaeli and Tandle because Kyra is naturally better with magic than Rune. That's why some of the lists contain what seem to be redundancies. -It would be nice to expand the combo lists a bit, (and the shop inventories) but I'm not sure where any available bytes are yet. I'll look into that in the distant future. -I tried to make it so Gryz could use Silentwave. It worked just fine, except that Chaz showed up and cut the enemies instead of Gryz. It was pretty silly.
